Er is zoveel te vertellen over Amerika en welke verschillen/opmerklijkheden we tegenkomen vergeleken met Nederland en Singapore. Een van die dingen is bijvoorbeeld dat de Amerikanen de inzet van de troepen in oa Afghanistan enorm steunen (even generaliserend gezegd). Je ziet bijvoorbeeld dat veel auto's een 'support our troops' lintje op de auto hebben.
Vandaag las ik ons wijkblad en daar kwam ik het volgende artikel tegen:
Learn to knit for free and give soldiers something warm from home
American soldiers have always answered their country's call to duty no matter what the cause or condition. Today, Americans are fighting in Afghanistan to ensure freedom and democracy for that nation. Because winters in Afghanistan can be brutal, what better way to honor American heroes serving there than giving them something warm and personal?
That's where knitting comes in. Participants can use their knitting skills to make wonderful projects and then feel the joy of giving them to American soldiers, but what if one doesn't have knitting skills? No problem.
ABC will teach participants how to knit through the Knitting for Soldiers course from 10am to noon, Tuesday Jan 26.
During class, participants will make neck warmers for soldiers. They will then be mailed to deserving soldiers. Bring to class one skein 100 percent wool yarn, two or four-ply, in beige or beige/white variegated, plus a size eight knitting needle, circular or straight. There is no cost in joining this class.
